Vice President, Head Instructor
Steve has been training in various forms of martial arts (both Eastern and Western) for over 30 years. He has been focusing on researching, practicing and teaching various forms of Western Martial Arts for the past 18 years and has been lucky enough to have trained with some of the most recognized WMA Instructors in the world. In 2001, Steve began intensive training under renowned edge weapons expert Colonel Dwight McLemore, and has been recognized as the inheritor of that system. While Steve practices several forms of WMA/HEMA, his main focus has been on ancient fighting arts and the fighting arts of early America. He has received international recognition for his work on gladiatorial combat as well as the frontier fighting arts of Colonial and early America. Steve, along with John Lennox and Gareth Thomas, has also been acknowledged for his work on maritime shipboard combat of the 17th-19th centuries. While still continuing to train and study under other Instructors, Steve has also been invited to teach at several WMA events and private workshops around the world. Recently, Steve has relocated to the Los Angeles area to serve as Head Instructor and Vice President of the Academy of Universal Martial Disciplines, a WMA training facility with the goal to bring WMA/HEMA into more mainstream awareness and to introduce and educate the general public on Western martial culture. Additionally, Steve is using his vast background of armed and unarmed fighting styles to create action sequences for film and live events for Iron Shield Arms LLC, a multi-faceted action centric company co-founded with John Maclay and Hunter Smith.
